Can they screw me over like this?

My former employer was payin for an on the job injury,while i was still there.Long story short,they don't have workman's comp. cause they didn';t want to pay the premiums,so i got a call from my doc this morning saying they refuse to pay for anything further,even though My arm is getting worse.Can they do that?
